Dastardly "Pink Eye" Problem

Pink Eye Sample
Well, today has been a revalation. Our herd is infected with "pink eye" Pink eye in cattle or Contagious Bovine Keratoconjuntivitis which is an infectious disease of the cornea and conjunctiva of the eye and can be spread very quickly unless stock are treated urgently. Long grass can aid in spreading the disease and as we have plenty of grass at the moment, this obviously helped.Kelly (The Vet) has been with us today and we have vaccinated the 11 animals and buried the heifer that died over the weekend. Apparently she had something called "Clostridium" which is a particularly nasty infection that can kill healthy cattle very easily. The heifer that died wass one of the healthiest looking in the herd. We will have to keep a close watch on the herd over the next three days and if there is any sign of weeping eyes, she will have to come back and inject them again. In the meantime we have to get our paddock cut for conventional hay bales and we will get a crush installed on our cattle yard ASAP. It sure is difficult handling animals without a crush and we had to rig up a metal gate as a temporary crush and the animals had to be tied to the rails to stop them from leaping around too much. Character building!
